Indian Head pennies (also known as Indian Penny) were minted from 1859 to 1909 and was officially replaced by the Lincoln cent in 1909. The Indian Head penny was designed by James Barton Longacre who was the engraver at the Philadelphia Mint. An interesting fact about Indian Head Pennies is how their ally changed throughout it's history. Coins struck from 1859 to 1864 were 88% copper and 12% nickel. In 1864 the alloy changed to 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc. This change made the coins lighter in weight. The rarest mint date is the 1909-S Indian Head with only 309,000 coins minted.
